Concentration camp survivor Nelly (Nina Hoss) returns to the rubble of Berlin and attempts the impossible: to reclaim a life that no longer exists. Disfigured, she undergoes facial reconstructive surgery and seeks out ex-husband Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld). He recognises her not as Nelly, who he believes to be long dead, but a Nelly-double, and engages her help in recovering her considerable inheritance.
