GCFF - Girls of the Sun
Based on the true story of a group of all-female Kurdish soldiers battling Isis in Iraq back in 2014, Girls of the Sun presents a profoundly unique spin on the war movie genre. Subversively slipping a gender-twist on what is conventionally a very male-orientated genre, Eva Husson’s muscular film is tough, harrowing but ultimately richly moving. As the unit fight misogynistic Isis soldiers, they quickly discover the men have a deep fear of being killed by a woman, since their religion deems that demise to be deeply dishonourable and one that would send them to hell. The female soldiers wield this power across a series of gripping battle scenes.
