Reprising the beloved Soviet New Year’s Eve romantic comedy but only thirty years later, this is a slick, big screen fairy tale. This modern remake highlights the enormous transformations in politics, fashion, the pace of life and film language over the past thirty years. Directed by the master of post-Soviet sci-fi thrillers, Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch, Wanted) there is an emphasis on glossy cinematic magic in a film celebrating a host of film stars past and present. Thirty years after his father’s romantic escapade with Nadezhda in Leningrad ended in disappointment, his son Kostya ends up drunk and in the same apartment on New Year’s Eve. He is there as part of a convoluted plot by his father’s friends to reunite his father with the woman with whom he shared a magical night. Only Kostya didn’t count on meeting her daughter, the beautiful Nadiya and falling in love or competing for her affections with her fiancé, a dull businessman who plans to propose to her that evening. Obstacles abound as an old romance is rekindled and a new one begins amidst fierce male competition for female attention.
